So you may not realize it but your computer may be infected with all sorts of germs and bacteria. A study done by the BBC concluded that your innocent little friend can contain “nearly 400 times more bacteria then a toilet seat”. What!!! Yup that’s right; your little electronic friend can be pretty dirty and needs a bath once in a while. (please don’t actually try and put your computer in the bathtub :D )

Well what can you do then? Here are some basic steps that will keep your computer clean and running smoothly. You may not realize it, but dust and particles can actually cause your computer to overheat, run slow or malfunction, including corroding internal part.

One of the easiest things you can start by doing is keep the area where the computer is kept clean. Next task is to say hello to your friend the keyboard. If you have a desktop, unplug the keyboard, take it outside and shake it upside down. For both a laptop and desktop, take a soft brush and sweep out any particles and suck any leftover dust with a vacuum. Another option is to go to your local Best Buy, Staples, or Radio Shack and get a can of compressed air and blow everything clean between the keys.

Now that you have the keyboard all dust free, take a mild cleaning agent or alcohol and put some on a soft cloth or q-tip (never put it directly on the keyboard) and wipe the keyboard down removing any kind of residue or stains. For laptops do this for the rest of the area except for the screen.

If you have a desktop, unplug the power source and remove the side panel. Again take a can of compressed air and a soft brush and vacuum and clean the outside and inside.

Last off is the monitor. The best solution is distilled water, although if you need a little more cleaning power you can make a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar. Put a light amount on a soft cloth or t-shirt and gently wipe down the screen in a consistent motion, again never directly put anything on the screen itself.

And that’s it! Your computer is clean, shiny and healthy once again.
