For most small businesses that already run Microsoft 365 and Windows-based applications, Azure is the more natural choice: identity, licensing, and management are shared with the tools you already pay for, and the local partner ecosystem is built around it. AWS is the better fit for businesses whose core product is a custom application built on Linux and open-source tools, or that need a specific AWS service. Both are excellent, both can host almost anything, and Azure vs AWS for small business comes down far more to what you run and who will manage it than to the feature lists.
Azure vs AWS for small business: what actually differs?
Strip away the marketing and both clouds offer the same fundamentals: virtual machines, storage, databases, networking, backup, and a long tail of specialized services. Reliability and security at the infrastructure level are comparable. The differences that matter to a 10 to 250 person business are practical ones.
Integration with Microsoft 365
If your staff sign in to Microsoft 365, they already have identities in Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory). Azure uses those same identities for access to servers, applications, and data, so there is one set of users, one MFA policy, and one place to disable a departing employee. Intune-managed devices, SharePoint, and Azure resources all share that fabric.
AWS can connect to your Microsoft identities through federation, and it works well once configured, but it is an additional layer to set up and maintain. For a business without a dedicated cloud engineer, that difference is significant.
Windows and SQL Server workloads
Most line-of-business applications used by Treasure Coast medical practices, law firms, contractors, and manufacturers run on Windows Server and SQL Server. Both clouds host them. Azure has licensing advantages: Azure Hybrid Benefit lets you apply existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance to Azure virtual machines, which can reduce cost meaningfully. Azure also offers managed SQL options that are a smaller step from an on-premise SQL Server than the AWS equivalents.
If your application stack is Linux, containers, Python, and open-source databases, the two are closer to even, and AWS's longer history with that ecosystem shows in the breadth of its tooling.
Pricing simplicity
Neither cloud is simple to price, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not read a bill. Both charge for compute, storage, data leaving the cloud, backups, and dozens of line items. In our experience Azure bills are a little easier for a small business to reason about, partly because reserved-instance and hybrid-benefit discounts map to licenses the business already understands, and partly because the cost management tools are integrated with the same portal as everything else. AWS pricing is granular and powerful; it rewards businesses with someone who watches it closely.
Either way, the largest cost driver is design, not vendor. A server left running at full size around the clock costs the same kind of money in both clouds.
Support options
Both vendors sell tiered support plans, and the entry tiers are slow enough that small businesses rarely rely on them. What matters more is the partner layer. Azure has a deep bench of Microsoft partners who handle small and mid-sized business migrations, and licensing through those partners often bundles support. AWS has an equally capable partner network, but it skews toward larger enterprises and software companies.
Local partner availability
This is the tiebreaker most owners overlook. The cloud you choose is the cloud your IT provider will manage for the next decade. On the Treasure Coast, most managed IT providers, including MainSail Data, run their client environments on Microsoft technology, which means Azure skills are readily available locally and AWS specialists are scarcer. Choosing the cloud your partner knows well means faster fixes and a lower bill.
When is AWS the right choice for a small business?
Despite the above, we recommend AWS when it clearly fits:
- Your business builds and sells software, and your developers are already productive on AWS.
- Your application depends on a specific AWS service with no close Azure equivalent.
- You are a Linux and open-source shop with no Windows servers to speak of.
- A key partner or customer requires AWS for integration or contractual reasons.
- You already have a well-run AWS environment and no reason to move.
In those cases the Microsoft integration advantage matters less, and AWS's maturity in developer tooling and services can outweigh it. Our DevOps and CI/CD work spans both platforms for exactly this reason.
A simple framework for deciding
- What do you run today? Windows Server, SQL Server, and Microsoft 365 point to Azure. Linux, containers, and open-source databases keep both in play.
- Who signs in? If everyone has a Microsoft 365 identity, using it everywhere is a security win and points to Azure.
- Who will manage it? Pick the cloud your IT partner or internal staff can operate confidently. This outweighs most technical differences.
- What licenses do you own? Existing Windows and SQL licenses with Software Assurance can offset Azure cost.
- Is there a hard requirement? A specific service, a customer mandate, or a compliance boundary can settle the question by itself.
- Is private or hybrid hosting better anyway? Some workloads, particularly stable applications with predictable load, are cheaper on a private cloud or a hosted server than on either public cloud. Do not skip this option.
What about a hybrid or private cloud?
Plenty of Treasure Coast businesses do not need a hyperscale cloud at all. A practice-management server that runs the same way every day, a file server, and a phone system can live on well-managed private infrastructure or in a hosted environment at lower cost and with simpler billing, with the public cloud used for backup, disaster recovery, and the pieces that benefit from elasticity. The right answer is frequently a mix, and a provider who offers cloud and hosting options across Azure, AWS, and private infrastructure can lay them side by side without a vendor bias.
Hurricane season changes the math
One argument for any cloud applies with special force here. A server in an office in Vero Beach or Stuart is exposed to storm surge, extended power outages, and roof damage every summer. Moving critical systems to a cloud region outside the storm's path, with a documented way for staff to connect from wherever they evacuated, is often the single biggest resilience improvement a business can make. Whether that region is Azure or AWS matters much less than the fact that it is not in the building.
